Verge & Gable Knives - Image 1

Description

Extruding a verge (gable) tile is an engineering challenge; cutting it is a masterclass in precision. Because the verge tile features a deep vertical leg, the knife must travel through a significantly larger volume of concrete than a standard tile. At WELSCH, we provide specialized verge knives engineered to maintain their exact 90-degree geometry under the intense mechanical resistance of the side-pocket kicker zone.

While standard blades might bow or deflect under the lateral pressure of the vertical leg, our knives provide the rigid, linear certainty required for a flawless gable finish. Our verge knives are crafted from the same high-specification spring steel, 0.8 to 1.5 mm (21 to 16-gauge), that defines our elite US and European flat blades.

For standard verge production, our spring steel knives are hardened and tempered to give slightly as they enter the deep side-pocket and instantly return to their original 3D-form. This elastic memory ensures the blade absorbs high-frequency harmonics without fracturing. For producers facing ultra-dense mixes or the highest production speeds, we offer our high-alloyed tool steel series, through-hardened in a vacuum to provide zero-flex cutting action. These knives maintain a perfectly vertical cut even when hitting dense concrete in the side-fender.

The 90-degree drop of the verge knife is the most vulnerable point for wear and deformation. Our knives are ground with a specific attack angle at the transition point between the flat top and the vertical leg, reducing displacement to ensure the concrete is sliced rather than pushed. Mirror-lapped surfaces prevent green concrete from sticking to the knife, ensuring the hanging leg of the verge tile remains structurally sound and aesthetically flawless.

Frequently Asked Questions

The deep vertical leg presents significantly more concrete volume and lateral pressure than standard tiles. Standard blades bow or deflect, compromising the 90-degree geometry critical for a flush fit against the gable.
Spring steel offers elastic recovery ideal for standard verge production at high speeds. Vacuum-hardened tool steel provides zero-flex rigidity for ultra-dense mixes where the blade must be absolutely immovable.
Mirror-lapped surfaces and specific attack angles at the transition point ensure the concrete is sliced cleanly rather than pushed, preventing adhesion and guaranteeing structurally sound hanging legs.
